Background, early life, and outside interests:
Roumiana Metcheva was born in 1950 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and is proficient in 3 languages- English, Polish, and Russian. She was the chief of the Physiological Ecology laboratory at the Insitute of Zoology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and has been a member of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute since 2000. Her research primarily focuses on toxin accumulation in the food chains of fishes and penguins.
Most Notable Achievements:
Metcheva is best known for her work on “ecotoxicology and biodiversity protection in the Antarctic” and even had Mount Mecheva named after her for her work at St.Kliment Ohridski Base. She is also the head of the Department of Ecosystem Research, Environmental Risk Assessment, and Conservation Biology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
