Background, early life, and outside interests:

Jennifer Rexford was born in Hawaii and lived in Virginia, Korea, and Japan as a child. She spent 8 and a half years working with AT&T research before she joined Princeton’s faculty in 2005 and is now the Gordon Y.S Wu Professor in Engineering and a chair of the computer science department.

Redford joined her field at a time when it was very underdeveloped but she recalls that her motivation to enter the field was due to her interest in math. When she got her first PC she was amazed at everything it could do and everything that she could do with it, even as a novice programmer. She quickly became interested in understanding how computers work and how to improve them.

Outside of her career, she focuses on helping improve the early education of computer science by being part of a program that helps to train high school teachers and helps with an outreach program where Princeton undergraduate students will go to high schools to bring the Princeton COS curriculum into their classrooms. Rexford recognizes that computer science is an ever-growing field and because of that there needs to be a focus on improving early education in the field.

Most Notable Achievements:

Rexford was awarded the 2004 Grace Murray Hopper Award for being an outstanding young computer professional. Her research has focused on methods to improve and expand digital communications.
