Background, early life, and outside interests:
In 2011 DiGiorgio left corporate sales to become a scientist and professor. During her Ph.D., she lived in the rainforest of Borneo for around a year studying orangutans to complete her fieldwork. She worked with 8th graders for a year as a Residence Scientist and taught them about climate change and now she currently teaches a Sustainable Futures writing sem class, in which she educates her students on climate change and conservation, at Princeton University. Outside of science DiGiorgio enjoys horror, punk, and ice cream.
Most Known For:
DiGiorgio’s research focuses on how and why organisms make the foraging choices that they do and how they use their environments to meet their nutritional needs. Her Ph.D. research determined that orangutans’ foraging choices could not solely be explained with the Optimal Foraging Theory alone but needs the addition of the Geometric Framework of Nutrition to properly explain the nutrient drivers behind orangutan feeding tactics.
Her lab at Rutgers, Vogel Lab, focuses more specifically on the impacts of frequent and severe wildfires on orangutan health, nutrient intake, and feeding behavior. Furthermore, she is exploring how social media can be used to communicate productive conservation messaging
