Science Communication Day, part of the Grad Futures Forum was held Monday, March 24 with CST staff participating in various panels.
Opening the day’s events, CST StudioLab Artistic/Technical Manager, Brendan Byrne, shared his strategies for creating a dynamic learning environment in StudioLab during the Creative Communications for (Non-Technical) Public Engagement Panel.
Directly following the panel, CST Assistant Directors Craig Marshall and Erin Flowers facilitated the ‘Art of Storytelling in Science’ workshop. Many of the points and tips raised by the panelists were fittingly practiced by GradFUTURES Forum Science Communication Day attendees. Participants learned how to adapt their research or work elevator pitches into engaging narratives that can be understandable to wide audiences. This skill is broadly applicable to grad students and academic professionals, and there was great discourse following the activities on both the fun and challenges of taking one’s work to audiences big and small who might not necessarily have the same academic or professional backgrounds.
