Over spring break, students in FRS 114: The Glass Class, taught by Dr. Vivian Feng, went on an unforgettable trip co-led by Dr. Gisella Gisolo from the Office of International Programs, in Venice, Italy, and delved into the rich world of Venetian glass art, culture, and history. Their immersive experience included guest lectures and guided tours to renowned museums, landmarks, theater, cultural conservation foundation, a glass mosaic tile factory, and historic glass furnace in Murano. A particular highlight of the trip was a full day at a Murano glass technical school, where students received hands-on training in glassworking techniques, such as glass fusion, slumping, and bead-making with lampwork. Students explored iconic Venetian landmarks and gained insight into the intersection of science, engineering, and cultural heritage preservation. Beyond the academic and cultural enrichment, the trip offered meaningful opportunities for students to connect with one another and build lasting memories in one of the world’s most enchanting cities.
