"Outrageous Scientific Discoveries" with Mike Lemonick

Last week, in STC 349 / ENV 349 / JRN 349 - Writing about Science, a popular course taught by Michael Lemonick, former opinion editor at Scientific American, students explored journalistic reports about “outrageous scientific discoveries.” They were introduced to the tactics in reporting discoveries, such as the “cold fusion” in the late 1980s that shocked the scientific communities (which turned out to be a fiasco). They then engaged enthusiastically in a student-led discussion of their assigned reading, a piece titled “Canceling Earthworms” from the book, The Best American Science and Nature Writing. The class ended with a virtual guest visit by Jen Schwartz, Senior Features Editor at Scientific American, who shared about her career path and answered questions from the students.
