Case Studies: Examples of Faculty Resources

The Council on Science and Technology partners with faculty in a myriad of ways. From providing one-time course-specific support to partnering on externally-funded project, the CST aims to share expertise and enhance opportunities to advance STEM education for the 21st Century. Below, you will find several case studies that highlight various ways that CST partners with faculty. National Science Foundation - Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE)

CASCE: Creative Art of Structural and Civil Engineering

Faculty and CST Executive Committee Member, Prof. Maria Garlock, along with CST Associate Director Dr. Evelyn Laffey, were awarded an NSF IUSE grant in order to transform a multidisciplinary engineering course into one that could be disseminated to other institutions.  In collaboration with faculty and staff from Virginia Tech, UMass-Amherst, and CUREE, a workshop was held this summer on the Princeton University Campus entitled, "Creative Art of Structural and Civil Engineering (CASCE)".  The goal of the workshop was to (a) understand cultures of various institutions and challenges for adoption, (b) introduce course themes, materials, pedagogy, and collect feedback, and (c) build a community of educators around CASCE.  Faculty from a wide variety of two and four year institutions were invited to participate in a two day workshop with the hope that they would all return to their students, giving them the ability to see engineering as a creative discipline. Multi-Dimensional Collaboration with the Department of Molecular Biology

The CST Professional Specialists possess expertise in a range of STEM fields, and are available to interact with departments in a variety of ways.  The following case study provides an example of the ways in which the Professional Specialists may fulfill a variety of roles in their interactions with departments and individual faculty members. Our multi-dimensional collaboration with the Department of Molecular Biology includes: course consultation, teaching, and co-hosting synergistic activities. Intensive Support of Course Transformation

ENV201: Introduction to Environmental Studies: Population, Land Use, Biodiversity, and Energy

An expanding human population and the desire of all people for a more prosperous life have placed tremendous demands on the environment. We will explore how human activities have affected land use, agriculture, fisheries, biodiversity, and the use of energy. Our focus is both global and local, highlighting not only fundamental changes in the biosphere, but also the ways in which individual decisions lead to major environmental changes. We explore the fundamental principles underlying contemporary environmental issues, and we use case studies to illustrate the scientific, political, economic, and social dimensions of environmental problems.

The collaboration with Catherine Riihimaki, CST Associate Director, focused on 4 goals: (1) revise and enhance course-wide conceptual frameworks, (2) articulate and advance critical course goals, (3) refocus STEM-based learning objectives, and (4) improve the multi-disciplinary instructional mechanics of ENV 201A/B.
